An Open Letter to Pakistani Citizens

Perhaps it’s just me, but I was thinking the other day that as I get older, the more unpredictable it all gets. Everything we thought we knew with great conviction begins to unravel. The expected, particularly now in politics, doesn’t seem to happen anymore, which makes analysis difficult, but extremely interesting.

Very few would have called Brexit, even fewer would have called a Trump victory. As for PTI gaining the highest number of seats, perhaps we saw it in the coming month, but a little over a year ago, a PTI win was not on the cards.

Unlike Brexit and Donald Trump, PTI’s success has generated a sense of optimism. The fact that a third party has dislodged the former ruling parties indicates that the people, and perhaps even the system is growing and moving forward. Maybe this is a start of the realization that dynastic feudal politics is retrogressive and has brought nothing but pain and regression to the country. Let’s hope that we have now reached a point where corruption and nepotism no longer have a place in society.

Whether you like Imran Khan or not, one attribute you cannot take away from him is his fierce determination. When one reflects on his achievements, we realise that he always started on the back-foot.

Let’s take cricket first. After his debut in Birmingham 1971, the head-line in one of the newspapers was ‘Imran Can’t.’ At that point, how many thought he would go on to become one the greatest all-rounders’ an inspiring captain, and a World Cup champion.

Then the cancer hospital. He was constantly told not to go through with it, as it will be impossible to build. A cancer hospital, free of charge for the poor, was what he dreamt, and that’s exactly what he got.

Now we move to politics. When he first started 22 years ago, nobody took him seriously. He was taunted and made fun of. But that did not deter him. He stayed the course, worked his tail off, and has once again, proved his detractors wrong.

I write this so we can understand the value of perseverance. I will say it again, even if you do not support the man, his perseverance should serve as an example to us all. Never give up on your dream, no matter how hard it gets, you have to tell yourself to keep at it. Take the knocks and keep moving forward.

Imran Khan will know that this is just the beginning of his 22-year struggle. He has a number of daunting challenges ahead of him. His speech after the election was extremely heartening, but the question remains, how will he and his team solve the economic crisis, the water shortage, education crisis, etc.? All we can do for now is wait. Six months should give us a general idea of which direction we are moving in.

Let’s wish him all the best. If he succeeds, Pakistan succeeds. We all have our differences. That will never change, and it shouldn’t. But, what can is our ability to listen, to have civilized discourse, and to accept that ideology is not more important than facts. Our thoughts on how to run the country might differ, but at the end of the day, our ultimate goal is to see Pakistan shine. God bless us all.
