Wapda-fed textile industry exempted from load shedding
On the intervention of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Pakistan Electric Power Company (better known as Pepco) has exempted the Wapda-fed textile industry from the ongoing load shedding being endured across the country. As a result, around 80 textile mills with a total electricity load of 179 MW, which were previously suffering four hours of load shedding a day, now have an uninterrupted supply of electricity. The decision was taken by the Energy Management Committee constituted by the Chief Minister with Member National Assembly Pervaiz Malik.
Pakistan’s beleaguered textile industry has been hit hard by the energy crisis with the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association vigorously campaigning the case of Wapda-fed textile units. However, the industry has also agreed to spare gas for domestic consumption for a day a week, which means that there will still be load shedding for the gas-run textile units.
